The human growth hormone (HGH) is a chemical messenger that is made by your pituitary gland. HGH supports growth and is at it’s highest level when you are young and naturally declines as you age. It supports many functions in the body including bone and tissue growth, metabolism, and brain health. Even though it declines as you age, there are natural ways to support the production of HGH.
Good Sleep
Your pituitary gland secretes HGH while you sleep and after exercise. So getting a good night sleep is important. Most people sleep better in a cool room and with no light. Other tips for getting a good night sleep is to stop using blue light electronics and eating 2 to 3 hours before bed. Instead, you can read, journal, meditate, or take a warm bath to help relax your body.
Exercise
Exercise is good for many reasons, but weight bearing exercise is especially good for promoting the production of HGH. This is a common recommendation for women because many tend to loose bone density as they age. If weights aren’t your thing, you can use resistance bands or your own body weight. Water aerobics is another great option. Pilates and yoga are two more low impact options that can improve your HGH levels, your balance, and your core strength.
Protein
Your body needs protein for building muscle and so that it can produce amino acids. Grass-fed beef, pasture raised poultry, wild caught fish, and wild game are all excellent sources of protein. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you can get your protein from lentils, beans, peas, and nuts and seeds.
Reduce Sugar
Eating too much sugar or refined carbohydrates can raise your insulin level and lower your HGH. Focus on eating low-glycemic index fruits like berries and non-starchy vegetables. And of course, it’s best to avoid processed carbs like pasta, crackers, and non-sprouted bread. If you do this, you may notice that you have more sustained energy through out the day.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Carrying extra weight can cause your body to produce low levels of HGH. Studies have shown the direct connection with excess abdominal fat and lower HGH levels. Belly fat is considered one of the most dangerous types of fat for your overall health. This is because it surrounds internal organs and can put you at risk for things like heart disease, diabetes and liver problems.
