There are many reasons why you may have dandruff. Knowing why you have dead flakey skin on your scalp and/or shoulders, can help you find a natural solution. Some possible reasons for dandruff include a dry or oily scalp, nutrient deficiency, hair product build-up, and harsh chemicals in hair products. It can also be caused by an overgrowth of a yeast like organism that is naturally occurring on most scalps. Here are some natural solutions for dandruff.
Apple Cider Vinegar
If your dandruff is caused by a fungus, apple cider vinegar (ACV) can help by killing the fungus. Some people experience instant relief when they apply a 50/50 solution of ACV and water. You can massage the solution into your scalp and let it sit a few minutes before rinsing your hair. Try this every day for 5 to 7 days or use it every other day for 10 days.
Oil or Coconut Oil
If you have dry scaly patches on your scalp, you can massage in a high quality organic unrefined coconut oil. Or you can try an organic extra virgin olive oil. If you apply just a little, let it sit for an hour and then comb your hair. If you use too much, you will want to shampoo your hair after an hour. Making sure you’re getting enough healthy omega-3 fats in your diet can also help relieve dry skin and scalp.
Essential Oils
Some essential oils can be help restore the natural balance of good bacteria on your scalp. Make sure to use a pure lab tested oil. You can try the essential oil by itself or mix it the organic olive or coconut oil mentioned above. Lemongrass is a good oil to try. Studies have been done that show it helps clear up dandruff after about 7 days of use. Other oils to try are lavender, cypress, and rosemary.
Clarifying Shampoo
If you use a lot of hair product, the flakes you see may not actually be dead skin. It could be from the build-up of hair product that isn’t getting completely washed out. Using a high quality natural clarifying shampoo once a week could help remove the product and eliminate the flakes. The environment working group (EWG) rates and scores the most popular body care products and can help you find the least toxic shampoo. There are also small companies that make high quality non-toxic shampoos that you can try.
Baking Soda
Baking soda has been used on skin and scalps ever since it was originally mined. It has antifungal properties that may be useful if this is the cause of your dandruff. Massage it into your wet hair and let is sit for a couple of minutes. Then wash your hair as usual. Do this each time you wash your hair for one to two weeks to see if this helps.
