Pineapple is not only tasty, but it has been used around the world as a natural remedy for things like digestion and allergies, for centuries. Pineapple is a fruit that grows on a tropical plant that is native to Paraguay. One of the most common natural uses for it is for aiding digestion of protein through the bromelain contained in the pineapple. Bromelain helps break down protein into smaller particles that your body can more easily absorb. Bromelain may also help reduce inflammation and swelling. You can’t get it by eating more pineapple, because it is only found in the stem and core. Here are some more benefits of pineapple.
Nutrient Dense
Pineapple is rich in an amazing assortment of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, B6, manganese, potassium, and thiamine. Studies have found at least 30 bioactive and nutritive compounds in pineapple juice. So adding pineapple to your daily routine can be of benefit to your health, as long as you are careful to not eat too much since it can raise your blood sugar level.
Fiber
Pineapple is rich in fiber, which can help you feel full longer. This means that it may help you loose weight, or maintain a healthy weight. Fiber is also a benefit for a healthy digestive tract since it helps move toxins out of the body. Most people don’t consume enough fiber, so adding pineapple to your diet to increase your fiber intake, may be just what you need.
Cardiovascular Health
Potassium is known to be supportive of cardiovascular health. And since pineapple contains potassium, it may be helpful in lowering blood pressure and maintaining good cardiovascular health. The antioxidants and vitamin C in pineapple, can also be of benefit to your cardiovascular system.
Reduces Inflammation
The bromelain in pineapple acts as an anti-inflammatory and can help reduce pain. It is also helpful for treating sports injuries, like sprains. Bromelain can help reduce swelling by blocking metabolites that cause it. It also activates a chemical in the blood that leads to reduced swelling. But remember, bromelain is found primarily in the pineapple root and core. So for these benefits, you’ll need to take a bromelain supplement.
Rich in Antioxidants
Your body is constantly being exposed to free radicals from chemicals that you are exposed to and from normal processing of food. These free radicals can cause harm to healthy cells. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals so that they don’t cause harm. Pineapple is rich in two types of antioxidants, so is a great ally in protecting your cells. Even better, the antioxidants in pineapple are known to have sn even longer lasting effect.
